Living life as a creative...
Working in creative fields for four decades it would seem I had already experienced my fill of creativity, but I knew that was just the warm up for me as an artist.
I started painting seriously in 2010, after a weekend workshop with esteemed Australian Artist, Donald Waters, and I feel this was the first pivotal step in giving me the confidence to pursue art more seriously.
My first solo exhibition here in Mackay at TJ's Gallery, twelve months later, was the most wonderful experience sharing my artwork with so many people, and gaining an insight first hand, into what it would be like to work as a full time artist.
With this project under my belt I felt a little more confident to get involved in more artist endeavors and joined the Mackay Art Society, exhibited and sold my art at local art shows, all of which led to commission work with new collectors.
As with most of us with young children growing up, school, university and my own working life, art took a back step for a while and time in the studio was sporadic. Every few years I entered the Woollam Art on Show Awards and sold several artworks.
By the end of 2019 and Covid 19 becoming a shocking reality, I continued working but found time to pursue another form of creativity. I founded, built and ran my own graphic design, art gallery and wearable art brand business called Lotus and Lilly Designs. This gave me the opportunity to start designing, drawing and painting seriously again, putting together several series of artworks to form a cohesive portfolio of art to sell on my website, along with my own branded Wearable Art range of products.
I continued entering more competions and exhibiting and was absolutely delighted to take out First Place - Art on Canvas at the Mackay Artist and Art Exhibition 2023 for my artwork titled "Lefki ammos Balon" a mixed media abstract artwork depicting my memory of a beautiful day spent exploring the coastline of Corfu in Greece in 2019.
With my love of art becoming more than I hobby, I thought it was time to learn more and invest in formal art education.
I signed up to a Mastery Art Program in November 2024, to gain expert tutoring in learning to become an educated artist, from the most basics of drawing, scale, proportion to learning the techniques of the old masters in oils to more modern approaches in mixed media. It has been and continues to be the most amazing experience in my creative career. My personal growth and skills have grown exponentially, and I feel deep down this sense of joy to finally be able to express myself authentically through my art.
Finding my voice and process, what my temperament is, how I like to paint, what inspires and calls me to create is a wonderful thing and for me personally as a creative...life changing.
My journey is really just starting and I look forward to many years paint brush in hand, bringing beautiful art to all my collectors.
