Hello there..

I am a mult-disciplinary artist working in the beautiful city of Mackay. I experience sensory cross-over so much of my work is sensory in subject, how something feels, smells, sounds, tastes. I work a few mediums; textile, paint and I create digital prints that illustrate sound..

I discovered the process of deconstructing fabric, - reducing cloth to it bare bones - while I was completing my final project for my Master of Contemporary Art. The idea of frayed edges was a bit of a nod to how I felt at the time; being the mum of two young children, a wife, daughter, sister, friend, studying and working full-time.

Incorporating textile in my work when my children were younger was something I could do in their presence while being present.

I strip fabric down to warp and weft and lay it bare, using the shapes, positioning and colour to tell the story. I’ve always liked to reduce artwork down to its simplest lines when I can, and I really admire the way a few lines on a page can convey so much meaning. Just like a simple gesture conveys meaning when speaking..or not!

In my work I use textile to convey feeling or represent people. I like to arrange the pieces graphically to create shifting colour, line and shape before I utilise paint to show movement, travelling or journeys and to create context. When I incorporate paper collage it is to create emphasis, a shift or an obstacle. I appreciate the way I can re-use fabric in this form.

I try to use offcuts and pre-loved items as my fabric source. This is becoming more difficult as I think appreciation for vintage garments in finer fabrics has grown and I’m finding that offcuts of those fabrics are also becoming scarce. Using textile is also my way of acknowledging the resources that went into making the fabric and preserving it as an artwork.
