Patterned by Nature
Growing Bee Corner through art, nature and place
Patterned by Nature is the second instalment of Bee Corner, an evolving public art precinct created by Mky City Heart Collective (MCHC) to bring art, nature, history and community together.
The project will transform an underutilised urban space into a cared-for, visually engaging destination, extending the story already established by the Bee Mindful mural and setting the scene for Where the Wild Things Play at McGuire’s Hotel.
At the heart of the project is Nature’s Tapestry — the interconnected relationship between plants, pollinators, wildlife and people.
From pollinators to habitat
Bee Mindful introduced the story of pollinators and the importance of bees, including the threat posed by the Varroa mite.
Patterned by Nature moves the story into the habitat that supports them.
The mural will feature native flora, wildlife and botanical forms, combined with geometric, Art Deco-inspired patterns. The designs draw on the intricate structures and patterns found throughout nature — from the symmetry of leaves and flowers to the relationships between plants, insects and wildlife.
And importantly, our bees will return to the wall, creating a visual connection back to Bee Mindful.
The third mural, Where the Wild Things Play, will then continue the story through Mackay’s wetland wildlife and the history of Barney’s Zoo at McGuire’s Hotel.
Together, the three murals create a simple narrative:
Pollinators. Habitat. Wildlife.
More than a mural
Patterned by Nature is about more than creating an attractive wall.
By giving an underutilised space a strong visual identity and purpose, the project aims to encourage people to stop, explore, photograph and spend time in the area. Greater activation and passive surveillance can help foster community ownership and pride, while contributing to a cleaner, safer and more welcoming environment.
The mural will be professionally installed using durable materials and finishes appropriate for the site, with the intention of creating a lasting piece of the local public art trail without adding unnecessary maintenance demands.
It also adds another destination to Mackay’s growing network of creative spaces, encouraging visitors to explore beyond a single venue or attraction and supporting activity for surrounding businesses.
Connecting the community
Although the two major murals are being installed on privately owned buildings, Bee Corner is designed as a broader community project.
MCHC is also working with Mackay Yarn Bombers on a proposed cross-stitch installation for the fencing alongside McGuire’s Hotel. Subject to final property ownership approvals, the works are expected to feature monochrome, Art Deco-inspired designs reflecting the entertainment character of the venue.
The project could become a rotating installation, with artworks refreshed or replaced over time to introduce new stories and ideas.
That is part of the nature of placemaking: places can change, evolve and continue to tell new stories.

Building on what already works
Patterned by Nature builds on the experience of the Bee Mindful Mural, launched in May 2024.
That project demonstrated how an underutilised laneway space could be transformed through collaboration with property owners, businesses, artists and community contributors. The mural has also become an extension of the surrounding entertainment precinct, particularly during larger events at McGuire’s Hotel.
The next stage continues that approach.
MCHC will work with property owners, tenants, surrounding businesses, artists and relevant authorities throughout the project. Installation will be carefully coordinated around access requirements, deliveries, weather conditions and site safety, building on the processes established during previous laneway projects.
A place within the Waterfront
Patterned by Nature also contributes to the broader vision for the Mackay Waterfront.
The Mackay Waterfront Place Strategy identifies public art, activation of Seventh Lane and stronger connections between the City Centre and Riverside precinct as important opportunities.
Patterned by Nature contributes directly to that vision by transforming an underutilised space into a destination with its own identity and story.
It also reflects Mackay’s place themes of Tropical Urban Creativity and Art Deco Sugartown, combining native botanical imagery with geometric design.
Rather than competing with existing Waterfront attractions, the project adds another layer of experience — giving residents, visitors, families and event-goers another reason to explore the precinct.
Creating belonging through art
At its heart, Patterned by Nature reflects a simple belief:
Healthy communities, like healthy ecosystems, are built through connection.
Connection between people and place.
Between art and history.
Between plants, pollinators and wildlife.
And between the spaces we create and the way we care for them.
Through Bee Corner, MCHC is creating more than a collection of murals. We are building a connected story about Mackay’s natural and cultural identity — and adding another chapter to the city’s growing public art trail.
Patterned by Nature is where habitat becomes art, art becomes place, and place becomes something worth caring for.
