Artist Statement
My current practice centres on the abstracted landscape as a means of expressing an inner, emotional response to the natural world and our fragile, singular environment. I draw particular focus from regional Queensland—its outback expanses, mountain ranges, waterways, wilderness, and shifting coastlines.
My inspiration is grounded in en plein air sketching. Working directly on site, I often use found materials—sticks with ink, washes, and drawing implements—to create immediate, responsive studies on paper. These works are later translated into paintings in the studio.
My painting process is intuitive and layered, guided by both these sketches and the remembered emotional resonance of place. I embrace risk in composition, building surfaces through fine layers of paint, then incising and scratching back to reveal unexpected colour and line beneath.
I seek to evoke the rhythm and energy of the landscape—its shifting moods and atmospheres—through a considered interplay of colour, space, and texture, and through an attention to light as it defines the surfaces of land, sky, and water.
