My present work focuses on the abstracted Landscape. It is a medium through which I can express my inner response to feelings for nature and our precious, unique environment. My present work focuses on regional Queensland, the outback, mountains, water, wilderness, and coastline.
My inspiration and joy for painting comes from sketching en plein air. I often use found materials on site such as sticks with ink, wash and drawing implements on paper then I transpose these sketches into paintings back in the studio.
When applying paint, my work is process driven, and I rely mostly on my sketches and memory of the emotional connection to place. I enjoy taking risks in composition. I often use many thin layers of paint as well as scratching through the paint to create line and reveal surprising colours underneath.
I strive for a sense of rhythm and energy of the landscape to capture the spirit of mood and place, with attention to colour, space and texture, and the beauty of light and how it defines the surface of land, sky, or water.
